The University of Bahrain Library

Established in 1986, the University of Bahrain emerged from two separate institutions, The Gulf Polytechnic and The University College of Arts, Sciences, and Education.

The UOB Library aims to promote high academic standards among undergraduate and graduate courses and university researchers by providing relevant collections, services and facilities.

The University of Bahrain Library is made up of four libraries and several specialized branch libraries:

The Central Library, at the Sakhir campus, provides collection and services for students and faculty at Colleges of Business, Colleges of Arts and College of Engineering.

The Science and Information Technology Library, at Sakhir campus, provides collection and services for students and faculty at Colleges of Science, Colleges of Information Technology and the College of Applied Studies.

The Ahmed Al-Farsi Medical library, at Salmaniya campus, provides collection and services for students and faculty at College of Health Sciences.

BTC library at the Sakhir campus provides collection and services for students and faculty at Bahrain Teachers College

The total number of staff who work in UOB library is 17, distributed between the Central Library and other branches. 5 members of the staff are professional librarians with Bachelor qualifications in Library & Information Science. Another 9 staff hold BA certificates in various subjects. The library management structure organizes the various departments within the library, in order to ensure that the services are provided to stakeholders according to the defined library functions and procedures, and as detailed in the staff job descriptions.

Library facilities

The Central Library in Sakhir campus covers a total area of 5520 m2. The library for the Colleges of Science and IT has a total area of 1250 m2 and the Law Library 836 m2. The BTC Library has an area of 300 m2 and the College of Health Sciences library covers a total of 1200 m2. At present, the total space available is around 10,500 m2. The total number of seats across all libraries is 1726 study seats, including 265 IT seats (where a computer is available to the user). In all, 25 group study rooms are available to students. It is anticipated that this space and the number of seats available to students will increase once the College of Engineering presently located in Isa Town Campus, moves to Sakhir campus as the project includes a larger new Engineering Library, and when the planned UOB campus in Muharraq is established.
